Age Grade This!!!
Based on an email communication with an athlete who
had questions about what age grading is.
Emailer:
I noticed that
you have added age graded results to your race results. I like
it.
Do your results calculate age grading for the age of each
athlete, or are they for 5 year age increments? For example,
Diane in last nights St. Greg's race - is her age graded
value calculated for a 57 year old woman? I am writing a short
article for the news letter, and want to be sure of my
facts.
Reply:
Both the age grade performance and age graded time
are based on the race distance, gender, and age, not the age group.
So the the
factors for 5k, female, 55-59 age group would look like the following:
|

So the age grade
factor, multiplied by the achieved time, yields an “age graded”
time that could be compared to the
performance of females from
21-29 who have the factor of 1 for the 5k.
The seconds in the table is the world class standard for that age. For a
5k female 57 years old, that standard is
1112 seconds, or 18:32.
By running a 22:45, Diane had achieved 81.47% of world class
performance of 57 yr old females.
By the way, based
on all that, there were 25 national class performances (for
age/gender) at St Greg’s in 2009:
